Inflicting Therapy? on Birmingham in General Therapy? Topics

Title: Inflicting Therapy? on Birmingham

Originally posted on Kerrang’s messageboards:
Ha Ha! I went to a comedy night at the Midland Art Centre earlier tonight - not exactly a rocking place, or my usual comedy club come to that but it had a good lineup on.
The compere was Mrs Barbara Nice (real name Janice Connelly, minor role in Phoenix Nights) who is an embarrassing Mum type character. Anytime I’ve seen her she tends to come over and have a chat in the intervals and today was no different.
At the start of the set she’d done a reworded version of the Passenger by Iggy Pop (pronounced Idgey) all about her journey on the number 35 bus. This included stage-diving onto 6 specially selected audience members, yes I was one of them…
At the interval she came over to thank me for catching her and I mentioned I’d done the same at a previous gig she’d compered at the Academy. Leading into how I was seeing Therapy? there next week, she’d never heard of them but I happened to have a CDR copy of High Anxiety for my mate Dave with me. Since there was plenty of space on it I put on a few Bsides and stuff - including a cover version of Abba’s Gimme Gimme Gimme (a man after midnight) and Barbara liked the idea. So much so that she opened up the second half of the show by coming on stage and singing along to my CD!
This involved swinging the microphone round her head while holding the cable in her teeth - meaning quite a hefty smack in the back of the head from the mike.
Mr Cairns, if you happen to be reading this (it might happen) then you are probably owed some money from the MAC!
Then at the end of the gig she asked the sound booth to put on some ‘getting up and leaving’ music - they hadn’t actually changed the CD so played a random track (Nobody Here But Us) for everyone to hear on the way out… while Barbara danced in the aisle.
About 150 people got introduced to Therapy?’s music tonight - I’m quite proud! :)
This is Barbara…
